Community, Culture, and Democratic Participation
Community, Culture, and Democratic Participation
The history of the Kataeb presence in Houston dates back to 1979, during one of the most difficult periods in Lebanon’s modern history.
At a time when Lebanon was facing immense challenges during the Lebanese Civil War, members of the Lebanese community in Houston came together around a shared belief in Lebanon’s sovereignty, identity, and future.
The beginnings of the Kataeb Houston Chapter were closely connected to a historic visit by Bachir Gemayel to Houston in late 1979.
During his visit, Bachir Gemayel met with members of the Lebanese community and encouraged supporters of the Kataeb movement to organize themselves abroad and establish a formal chapter in Houston.
Following this visit, the Kataeb Houston Chapter was organized and officially chartered by the leadership of the Kataeb Party in Beirut.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, members of the Kataeb Houston Chapter regularly gathered to discuss developments in Lebanon, support the Lebanese cause abroad, and strengthen ties within the Lebanese-American community.
Many of these meetings were held at Dunfey's Hotel, which became the gathering place for Lebanese community members during that era.
The chapter served not only as a political and cultural connection to Lebanon, but also as a source of unity, friendship, and support for Lebanese families living in Texas.
Even thousands of miles away from Lebanon, members remained deeply connected to the future of our homeland.
Over the decades, the activity and organization of the chapter naturally evolved with changing times and generations.
However, the spirit and principles of the Kataeb remained alive within Houston’s Lebanese community.
Many individuals who participated in the early years continue to preserve the values that inspired the chapter’s creation in 1979.
Through personal relationships, community gatherings, and continued support for Lebanon, the legacy of the Kataeb movement remained present in Houston across generations.

Today, the Kataeb Houston Chapter is entering a renewed phase of organization and community engagement.
The chapter continues to strengthen its role within the Lebanese-American community by focusing on:
The chapter remains committed to honoring the dedication of the founding generation while preparing for the future and strengthening the connection between Houston’s Lebanese community and Lebanon itself.
Nearly five decades after its beginnings, the spirit that brought the chapter together in 1979 continues today.
The Kataeb Houston Chapter looks toward the future with a renewed sense of purpose, responsibility, and commitment to the Lebanese community in Houston and to Lebanon.
By preserving history, strengthening community ties, and engaging future generations, the chapter continues the mission that began in Houston in 1979.
